Indian Classical Dance Festival

Khan Ju Ling Magicians with a Message performs this magical journey of illusion and dance, which tells the story of a 19th century Mongolian to travels to San Francisco during the Gold Rush. Balinese Family Festival
The Asian Art Museum and the Consulate General of Indonesia host a festival on Aug. 14, noon-3 p.m. At 12:15 and 12:45 p.m., visitors can listen to a Balinese folktale; at 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.; dancers will teach the basic steps of the welcome dance, Panyembrama; and at 2:30 p.m., the Gamelan Sekar Jaya will perform The Sacred Roots of Balinese Dance. Diablo Japanese American Club Summer festival This festival, in its 43rd year, will include exhibits, live entertainment, demonstrations and food. Aug. 14, 2 p.m.-9 p.m.; and Aug. 15, noon-9 p.m. (Diablo Japanese American Cultural Center, 3165 Treat Blvd., Concord. 510-682-5299.)

The Chinese Americans
This documentary tells the inspiring success stories of culinary experts Martin Yan and Shirley Fong, architect I.M. Pei, AIDS researcher David Ho, TV journalist Connie Chung and playwright David Henry Hwang. It is to air on KVIE-Channel 6 in Sacramento at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Fillmore Part of KQED’s Peabody Award-winning Neighborhoods: Hidden Cities in San Francisco series, The Fillmore explores Japantown, the jazz heydey and urban renewal. Airs on KQED-Channel 9 at 9 p.m. on Saturday, 4 p.m. on Sunday, and 10 p.m. on Monday.

Asian Youth Orchestra and Jon Nakamatsu

A Winding River: The Journey of Contemporary Art in Vietnam

Invention and Invocation

Mother Courage and Her Children
The Ma-Yi Theater Ensemble presents this play, written by Bertoli Brecht, directed by Tazewell Thomson, and adapted by Rodolfo Vera. Events

Dalai Lama Welcoming Ceremony
His Holiness the Dalai Lama will speak as part of “Transforming the Millennium.” On Aug. 16, 10 a.m., he will speak at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis along with Gov. Frank O’Bannon, Mayor Steve Goldsmith, Rabbi Dennis Sasso, Clark Williamson, Chancellor William Martin and Imam Michale Saahir. Tickets are available for $10 and $15 through Ticketmaster at 317-239-5151. In addition, the Dalai Lama will perform the Kalachakra Initiation for World Peace in Bloomington, Aug. 17-27. On Aug. 18, 6 p.m., the Dalai Lama will give a one-hour presentation on “Ethics of the New Millennium” at Assembly Hall at Indiana University.
