Ethnic Markets Serve the Bay Area

In recent years the Bay Area has enjoyed an influx of large Asian American supermarkets. The most notable is the massive Ranch 99 supermarket in Richmond, Calif., which opened in 1998. A chain headquartered in Buena Park, Calif., Ranch 99 has earned a reputation as a hip, premier supermarket chain that caters to the needs of Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans alike.

In 1984 Roger Chen founded Ranch 99’s parent company, TAWA Supermarkets, with stores near large Asian neighborhoods in Northern California. In 1988, TAWA began looking to Southern California and Taiwan for capital to expand its supermarket business. TAWA today develops Asian superstores across the country as well as shopping plazas, employing thousands and raking in annual revenues in the hundreds of millions.
