Hong Kong movie star Leslie Cheung has had it allsuccess as a pop music sensation, and critical kudos as the lead actor who takes chances in Chen Kaiges Farewell My Concubine and Wong Kar-wais Happy Together. He takes another chance with Double Tap, a new Hong Kong action film directed by Chi Leung Law, which gets its U.S. premiere at the 4 Star Theatres fourth annual Asian Film Festival. Like Cheung, flirting with artistically ambitious projects as well as crowd-pleasers, Double Tap plays it both ways. Rife with anxiety about gun violence yet ready to shoot to thrill, the movie is an ambitious, arty homage and critique of the ultra-violent films that drew many American movie fans to Hong Kong cinema in the first place.
