Kintetsu Enterprises Strikes Out

Dozens speak out to save S.F.’s Japantown Bowl

The battle to save Japantown Bowl heated up as opponents of the closure made their case at City Hall on Aug. 1. Kintetsu Enterprises of America—which owns nearby buildings, hotels and the mall area—has decided to shut down the city’s largest bowling alley on Sept. 20 and sell the building, which sits on the corner of Post and Webster streets. Only the adjoining coffee shop and sushi restaurant will remain.

With members of the greater Japantown community crying foul over Kintetsu’s lack of full discussions with them, Supervisor Mabel Teng called for a hearing before the Board of Supervisors’ Housing and Social Policy Committee.

20 San Francisco Schools Resegregated

A school system that was among the most diverse in the nation has resegregated, largely due to a 1999 court order telling San Francisco’s school district to end race-based enrollment, according to a state-sponsored report.

Racial quotas in San Francisco school admissions were abolished last fall, following a 1994 lawsuit filed by several local Chinese American families. In the suit, the families charged that the school system discriminated against their children because of their ethnicity. As a result, they claimed, the children were being rejected from desirable schools.
