A school system that was among the most diverse in the nation has resegregated, largely due to a 1999 court order telling San Franciscos school district to end race-based enrollment, according to a state-sponsored report.
Racial quotas in San Francisco school admissions were abolished last fall, following a 1994 lawsuit filed by several local Chinese American families. In the suit, the families charged that the school system discriminated against their children because of their ethnicity. As a result, they claimed, the children were being rejected from desirable schools.
