Asian Youths Clash with Police in British Town

By Associated Press

Burnley, England — South Asian youths pelted police and cars with stones overnight after a taxi driver of Asian descent was attacked by white men, police said on June 24.

Police said they also broke up “minor altercations” between white and youths of Asian descent in the Lancashire town of Burnley. One pub had its windows smashed, but there were no reports of injuries. A Lancashire police spokesman said the violence was “spontaneous and minor.”

On Saturday, June 23, the Asian British taxi driver suffered a fractured cheekbone when he was attacked by a gang of white men in Burnley. Police said they were treating the attack as a racist incident.

Burnley, in northwestern England, is a gritty former textile town — as is nearby Oldham, where tensions between white and South Asian residents erupted into violence for three nights last month.
