State Candidates

Governor
Gray Davis*
Davis has done a lot for the Asian Pacific American community, including appointing some 200 APAs to state positions and supporting legislation that created an APA anti-hate crimes program in the Department of Justice. Vote for Davis.

Lieutant Governor
Cruz Bustamante*
Bustamante is the highest-ranking Latino office holder in the United States. In his time as Lieutant governor, he has focused on diversity issues, doing outreach to Arab Americans and Sikh Americans after Sept. 11 and organizing the distribution of the film Farewell to Manzanar to schools throughout the state. Help keep diversity alive: vote for Bustamante.

Secretary of State
Kevin Shelley
The current representative for District 12, Kevin Shelley has been named Legislator of the Year four times in his career. A major innovator for Sunshine Laws, Shelley also has a strong record for election reform, starting when he helped to establish the San Francisco Ethics Commission. With his goals of supporting electoral technology and increasing voter participation, Shelley is the right choice.

Attorney General
Bill Lockyer*
Lockyer’s last four years as attorney general have been solid. He re-establish a Civil Rights Enforcement Section in his office; opened the Office of Immigrant Assistance to deal specifically with immigration fraud and made California a leader in tracking hate crimes with the Hate Crimes Task Force. Lockyer also has innovative ideas about energy and budget problems. His opponent Republican Dick Ackerman has made some scary remarks about national security over civil rights.

Controller
Steve Westly
Senior vice-president of eBay, Westly’s business background makes him the qualified candidate for this position as chief fiscal watchdog for the state. Westly feels strongly connected to the APA community (yup, his wife is Chinese American) and vows to make sure our issues are one of his top priorities.

Treasurer
Phil Angelides*
A real estate developer who wants to continue his work as treasurer, Angelides has been doing innovative work with state funds and wants to invest more into California’s communities. Let’s keep him in office.

Insurance Commissioner
John Garamendi
As the first elected insurance commissioner of California, Garamendi reduced homeowner, auto and worker compensation rates and reduced fraud. His experience puts him ahead of the game, vote for him.

State Superintendent of Equalization
Jack O’Connell
O’Connell spearheaded important education legislation during his two years in the California state legislature, including helping to increase teacher salaries and reduce class size. His real solutions and experience trump his opponents’ ideas of “academic attire” for public schools and etiquette classes. Vote for O’Connell.

Board of Equalization, District 1
Mark Bendick
Even though Carole Migden has a strong record in the assembly as a legislator, Bendick was a Board of Equalization tax auditor and worked with small businesses and large high tech corporations. His experience will give him the upper hand in this important job.

Assembly District 13
Mark Leno
Leno’s record on the board has been strong and he is a big supporter of language-access legislation. He is a clear-headed experienced legislator and will do us proud in Sacramento.

* - Denotes incumbent
